How to Start a Raw Food Diet
As you learn more about the impact eating habits have on your health and longevity, you may want to consider raw foods. While this lifestyle may be quite different from your normal travel expenses, you may find that you thrive on eating more raw foods.
What exactly is raw food? Generally, it means to eat only things that are completely natural. This means uncooked or undercooked food. For some people, this may even include raw meat, though most vegetarians do not eat meat, except perhaps a little sushi.
Here are some tips to help you make the change:
1. Make a list of acceptable foods that are attractive. There are many books and websites available with lists of food that are in line with dietary principles. You will probably find more food than you ever thought possible. Make a long list so you can cater for a variety of foods and flavors!
2. Go shopping. Making a budget can be challenging at first. While most of the food you buy may not be expensive, there will be plenty. Most raw foods do not provide many calories; you will be amazed at how much you need food.
* Avoid over-buying, however; most foods will not last as long as most processed foods.
3. Start small. If you are not used to eating a lot of fruit, the obsession can cause more than just stomach upset. Introduce raw foods slowly. Replace raw foods at each meal with something you have not eaten raw. Continue to add food for a week or two, until it is 100% green.
4. Discard processed foods. Another way to ensure that you will not fall into the trap is to have some easy food available. We all have moments of weakness, so prepare your own. Friends, family, and food banks are likely to take what you no longer want to eat.
* If you have others in the house who will not eat raw, at least try to dispose of the things you will find most tempting.
5. Take a good multivitamin. Certain nutrients may be missing from raw vegan foods, and Vitamin B-12 is an old example. Even if you do not eat vegan and often ridicule the supplements produced, talk to your doctor before dismissing the idea.
6. Remember to get enough protein. Protein is another great nutrient that you may lack if you are not careful. Eating a balanced diet is as important as ever.
7. Keep preparing until your food is ready. Examine how you feel. Are you losing weight? Are you losing too much weight? Is there any other food you would like to try? Are there any foods you would like to remove?
8. Serve raw food for at least 30 days. If you can go 30 days without cheating, you should have a very good idea of whether raw food is something you want to keep going or not. Any food eaten without food will often interfere with accurate assessment.
If a vegetarian diet is something you want to try, give the steps above a shot. Changing eating habits is often a challenge; our bodies and minds are accustomed to certain foods. Expect challenging times in your first 30 to 60 days.
Remember, though, that medical data clearly shows that our food choices have a profound effect on our health. Maybe raw food is your answer.
